I need a counter
Not the flat thing you cook on. A ticker or something.
Sean. Ready? Go.
I need a simple means of keeping track of how many posts I want to title ‘WTF?!?’
Today Turkey passed a resolution allowing their government to take military action in Iraq if need be. This gives the Turkish Government a year of leeway to take military action of they deem it necessary. Notice they aren’t invading yet. Just getting the preliminary political crap cleared out to leave room for action.
My favorite political failure (the pres) said this in response, Washington is “making it clear to Turkey it is not in their interest to send more troops in… there is a better way to deal with the issue”.
what… like a surge? Like a war that has lasted for years without tangible outcome? Like a fence-sitting, party-line voting, crippled government so worried about appearances that they forget to actually DO anything?
Don’t get me wrong. Turkey has its own garbage to clean up. Some Armenian friends of mine have a particularly large bone to pick with them. But I don’t see how our government and our president are in any position to say ‘Hey- you should totally do THIS to help fix Iraq.’ Yeah buddy. We’ve been doing that for years. We’ve been doing it wrong, mind you. But we’ve been doing it. Practicing doing something in the most backasswards means possible is still practice. Right?

Right, because the best plan in an already fucked up situation is to have another group come in with unclear intentions and goals and no controls. Maybe we should have the UN take care of it. I’m sure they can make vague threats and possibly send in a small number of (mostly US) troops with orders not to take any actions whatsoever, even to prevent the killing of civilians.
I agree, that the issue is a “fence-sitting, party-line voting, crippled government so worried about appearances that they forget to actually DO anything?” but the blame does not lie (solely) with the Executive branch. But rather with the people who keep putting the party hacks into office. Yeah. You.
I think the president’s response is correct. “We’re having enough trouble fighting a war while trying not to kill civilians when we can’t tell the civilians from the enemy. So don’t go wandering and adding to the mess.”

I’m not saying Turkish troops in Iraq would be an improvement. I’m saying that we’re hardly in a position to say things like that.
oh and I need a link to your post about that.
