Respect- waxing and waning

So our esteemed president is catching a lot of flak for a lot of things.  A person in his position expects this and I wouldn’t want to disappoint…

First- Props to the man for helping NASA out of a bind.  NASA is a horribly broken program but with some help, can turn itself into something good and useful.  Recently, Obama decided to ensure that their budget goes up, the overpriced/under-delivered heavy lift vehicle was pushed aside in favor of a much more cost-effective launcher and he suggested (ordered?) that we try landing on Phobos and/or Deimos before landing on Mars.  See, we know how to get to Mars.  We don’t know how to land safely yet.  The atmosphere is too thin for parachutes or wings to provide enough lift/resistance to slow down a human-carrying craft safely.  The moons are substantially smaller and thus have far less pull so slowing down will be much easier and can probably be done with cost-effective retro rockets of some sort.  Kudos for pushing NASA toward something smart, Pres.  Kudos indeed.

Second- WTF??  You fly a basically private jet 1/3 of the way around the world to combat climate change?  WHAT THE HELL!  Should we take a trawler out to save tuna populations?  Or maybe buy a corvette to show our disdain for gas guzzlers?  Welcome to the 21st century, people.  Get on your computer.  Set up a video conference.  Use less energy than any one of your armored cars to have the same conversations, get more done faster, save every country involved a wad of cash and burn far fewer dinosaurs in the process.   Set a friggin example. In a world where economic downturn is rampant, global warming is our favorite bugaboo and oil prices are steadily climbing, why not make an effort to address all three situations at once?  For a photo op?  Screw you, sir.  Screw you.

Third- Your healthcare reform bills are a total joke.   Have a look at tort reform.  Encourage preventative medicine. Make a public display of yourself and your family taking care of yourselves, working out, eating healthy foods… Be the example you should be.

Fourth- You spoke in your campaign about abolishing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy… it’s been most of a year and that policy still stands.  How many more of your campaign promises are you disregarding now that you’re in the position you sought?

I’m sorely disappointed in your performance so far as president of these United States and if I had voted for you, I’d be even more upset.  Your focus on popularity over efficacy is the same problem that most of our politicians have but as you’re at the top of the political ladder and have such a rabid mob of unthinking supporters, you’ve epitomized much of what is wrong with this country.  You are the foil to Bush’s willingness to completely disregard popular sentiment. Between the two of you, it’s no wonder this country is going the way it is…

Unfortunately the whack-jobs out there criticizing this administration for crap that’s not true, make it harder for legitimate criticisms to gain traction. At the same time you’ve got the whack-jobs at the other end of the spectrum who think Obama is the second coming of FDR or Jesus or RoboCop or something who shout down any criticism on the grounds of racism.
In reality, it seems to me that there’s been little or no meaningful progress on any of his campaign promises. The economy is “recovering” on the back of huge debts and job cuts. The environment is still being treated as a political issue rather than a scientific one. And the gay community is seriously pissed at the utter lack of effort, let alone progress on the issues he got their votes based on.
What amazes me is that people actually believed he would be different though. Was it based on his national experience? Oh wait, he didn’t finish his first term in a national office. Was it his executive experience? Nope. Doesn’t have that. How about his demonstrated ability to influence change in congress? Nope. Seriously. Other than giving good speeches, what did he have going for him?

So, did you send this post to the White House?
